Sadiq Khan Visits Bonus Pastor Catholic College

On Friday 25th November, Bonus Pastor Catholic College were privileged to host Sadiq Khan, the Mayor of London, as he announced the extension of the ULEZ Zone. Enthusiastic Geographers and Climate Change activists in Year 10 and 11 were invited to attend his speech in our very own library. They heard of his passion and commitment to create a greener London for our young people to live in. This was a monumental moment for our community. We were extremely proud of all the staff and students who contributed to the success of this event.

Our students, Isatu and Sophia, conveyed impressive passion and courage through their speeches. Robert shared his beautiful talent through his piano recital. Below are Robert and Sophia’s reflection on the day:

In the morning, we spent a lot of time preparing for the event and meeting Sadiq Khan’s team. We joined together in the library, where the event was live streamed. Isatu started the event by giving a speech where she spoke about the impact air pollution and climate change is having both here in London and globally. She gave examples of the recent heatwave in London and the devastating floods that have recently happened in Pakistan. Isatu also emphasised the important voice that young people have in forcing governments to make changes that protect our common home and the most vulnerable in society.

We then heard from Dr Mark Hayden, who represented Great Ormand Street Hospital. He shared his scientific insight on the impact that air pollution has on the health of the young people who live with pollution. He also shared his first-hand experience, as a doctor, of how pollution impacts the families in our local community.

Sophia had the privilege to introduce Sadiq Khan and confidently shared her own experience of the impact air pollution can have on our health. We were part of seeing democracy in action. In his speech, Sadiq Khan shared his awareness of the impact climate change has on our communities within London and his commitment to reducing this through the extension of the ULEZ zone.

Mr Ronan, our headteacher, shared his pride in the steps our students regularly take to battle our leaders in taking action on a local level (for example, campaigning to implement recycling in our school), and at a governmental level. Robert performed ‘Vivace’ by Teleman for all who attended the event in person and online.

The day was fantastic. We saw our family and local community being respected and honoured by the government. We were proud that this important announcement was made at our school and that the Mayor of London shares our commitment to create a better future for us all.
