St Ethelbert’s Catholic Primary School & Nursery in Ramsgate, are bidding a fond farewell this summer to two of its most dedicated figures, Mrs Julie Rydz and Mrs Maureen Francis, who are both retiring after an incredible 30 years of service each.
Their decades of commitment were recently honoured at a special Celebration Mass at St George’s Cathedral, celebrated by Archbishop John Wilson, where both women received certificates and medals recognising their outstanding service to Catholic education.
From Pupil to Staff: Mrs Rydz Retires After Three Decades
Mrs Rydz’s history with St Ethelbert’s spans much longer than her 30 years of official employment. After moving to the area from London with her family, she attended the school as a pupil alongside her siblings. By age 15, she was already volunteering in the infant classes.
She returned as a parent volunteer in the 1980s while her own children attended the school, eventually securing a permanent position.
Throughout her career, Mrs Rydz has been a versatile and vital part of school life:
- Working across Reception, Year 1, and Year 2 alongside long-standing colleagues including Sister Maria, Mrs Pitt, and Teresa Ebden.
- Serving as a lunchtime supervisor since 1995, acting as a reassuring and smiling face for generations of children.
While retiring from her main role, she will remain with the school two days a week supporting the wraparound care provision.
“It has been an absolute pleasure to work alongside Mrs Rydz,” said Mr Marshall, the Headteacher. “On behalf of all the staff, governors, children, parents, and past pupils, I would like to thank her for everything. We wish her a long, happy retirement with her husband, Derek.”
Thirty Years of Leadership: Vice Chair of Governors Steps Down
Also retiring this summer is Mrs Maureen Francis, the school’s much-valued Vice Chair of Governors and Foundation Governor.
Over her 30-year tenure—which included a period serving as the Chair of Governors—Mrs Francis provided steadfast leadership, wise guidance, and unwavering support to the staff and school community.
To mark her retirement, Mrs Francis was a guest at the recent Year 6 Leavers Mass and Afternoon Tea, where staff and pupils presented her with flowers, cards, and gifts.
While she is stepping down from her governance role, Mrs Francis will remain a familiar face locally as she continues to devote her time to St Ethelbert’s Church and parish.
The school extended its deepest gratitude to Mrs Francis for her three decades of leadership and wishes her a well-deserved, happy retirement.
